Liposuction and Weight Gain

1. What happens if I gain weight after liposuction?

As a patient gains more weight following liposuction, the results become less and less apparent. After liposuction, the patient should weigh less because a certain amount of fat was removed. If 5 pounds of fat is removed during a liposuction procedure, then the patient should maintain a weight of 5 pounds less than they were pre-surgery. If, after having liposuction, a patient regains the same amount of weight that was removed, the results of liposuction will still be visible but not as dramatic as if he or she had kept the weight off. The new body shape will remain despite the weight gain.

2. If I gain weight, does fat come back in the treated areas?

As long as the patient does not gain a significant amount of weight after liposuction, the fat will not come back to treated areas. Fat can return to previously treated areas if the patient does gain a significant amount of weight. However, the proportion of fat accumulation in the areas that underwent liposuction will be less than in other areas of the body.

3. Where does the fat go when a person gains weight after liposuction?

If a person gains weight following liposuction, most of the fat goes to the areas that were not treated with liposuction. Relatively little fat will accumulate in areas where liposuction has been performed.

4. If I do not gain weight, does fat come back in the treated areas?

Fat does not come back if the patient does not gain weight following liposuction. Liposuction removes the fat cells and they will not reform if no weight is gained. However, the aging process will cause the size and location of fat deposits to change, despite liposuction. Even with these gradual changes, the results of liposuction will always be apparent.

5. What can I expect if I get pregnant after liposuction?

If a patient gets pregnant after liposuction, the results of liposuction will return after the pregnancy. A woman who becomes pregnant after liposuction will gain weight as a normal part of pregnancy. After she gives birth and loses the excess weight, her body will return to its post-liposuction shape, almost as if she had never been pregnant.
